Hispanic Tradition of the Old Philippines

I am an old soul, and I admit that I have a flair for the classics. I enjoy looking back once and a while imagining what it was like to live without the Internet nor the comforts of modern transportation.

Ever since I read Jose Rizal’s novels- Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, it never escaped me to think what it must have felt to love during the times of Crisostomo Ibarra and Maria Clara. Things were so simple then, and people are more connected with each other. Love letters written by hand, all sound so genuine to me.

These featured photos are but remnants of the bygone years; a time when the Philippines was still a colony of Spain. It was a long 300 years of culture and tradition passed on to the Indios and later on to the Filipinos. Today, not many realize the value of this rich heritage just because there is a shift of priorities. Everybody is after the American Dream, and by that I mean keeping ahead of the rat race leaving behind their identities.

But there goes the century old question- what makes a Filipino? Well, that in itself will take another article to discuss. Enjoy the photos.
